The Rhone Valley is one of the most historic regions. Wine was made here by the Romans when they occupied Gaul. Guigal is a family owned operation that is now in its third generation. They have achieved much in a short space of time, becoming stalwarts of the area. Guigal buy additional fruit to make this large volume blend but they pay their growers a multiple of the market rate to ensure the fruit meets their exacting specifications. The blend in Syrah dominant with Grenache and a little Mourvedre in support. The winemaking is both traditional and slow with a long maceration on skins, controlled temperatures and 18 months maturation in old oak vats before release. The end result is a full bodied with with velvety tannins and notes of blackberries, cherries, and licorice spice. This is not only a great introduction to a Southern Rhone style blend, buy a model of consistency, which when coupled with its wide availability makes it a frequent choice for many. If you are looking for something versatile and reliable, look no further.
