The organically farmed Castillon, where Stephan Derenoncourt, the superstar of right bank winemaking, resides personally. Covering 11.5 hectares, it's primarily limestone with clay. It's composed of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Initially, the nose resembles Clos Louie more than Clos Puy Arnaud or Aiguilhe, with distinct, finely layered scents of red cherries. Dense, red, with lovely warmth. Slightly opulent but not heavy. Fresh plums and light licorice. So delicate, ethereal, and intoxicatingly aromatic. In the mouth, it's all about cherries, but unlike its neighbor Clos Puy Arnaud, it's not harvested ultra-early and doesn't lean so heavily toward Cabernet Franc like Loire wines; instead, it's a true Bordeaux with a good punch and a nice sweet fullness. It's a real delight, and it would even be a big hit in Saint Emilion because it's incredibly refined yet bursting with fresh and abundant cherry fruit.
