Comando G is a remarkable wine project helmed by Daniel Landi and Fernando Garcia, friends and winemakers passionate about the vineyards nestled in the Sierra de Gredos, near Madrid, Spain. Their project, which began in 2008, centers around the mountainous terrain, which is home to scattered, nearly inaccessible vineyard plots.
The vineyards, cultivated biodynamically, are situated at high altitudes, boast freely draining soils, and are influenced by a mild, relatively humid microclimate, unusual for central Spain. These conditions lead to an extended growing season and wines with moderate alcohol levels. The duo predominantly works with old Garnacha vines planted in sandy soils derived from granite, slate, and quartz.
Rumbo al Norte, originates from a 0.3-hectare vineyard. It features mixed Garnacha vines growing around enormous boulders on sandy and silty mountain soils. This vineyard ripens late, well into October, due to its elevation and north-facing aspect, resulting in darker fruit flavors and a sweeter impression of the fruit with a spicy undertone. The wine is made through hand harvesting, whole-cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts in open-top French oak casks, and aging in a combination of French oak barrels, foudre, and clay amphorae. The final product is strikingly pale, intensely aromatic, and extraordinarily flavorful.
NOTES FROM VINOVOSS SOMMELIER
Comando G Rumbo al Norte is an exceptional wine that showcases the unique characteristics of the Spanish region it hails from.On the nose, Comando G Rumbo al Norte offers an enticing bouquet of ripe red fruits, such as cherries and raspberries, accompanied by subtle floral notes. There is also a hint of spice, adding complexity to the aromatic profile.
The palate is equally impressive, with a harmonious balance between fruit, acidity, and tannins. The red fruit flavors continue to shine, accompanied by a touch of earthiness that adds depth and intrigue. The wine has a medium body, with a silky texture that coats the palate and leaves a lingering finish.
Comando G Rumbo al Norte is a wine that can be enjoyed now, but it also has the potential to age gracefully. Its structure and complexity suggest that it will continue to evolve and develop over the years, revealing even more layers of flavor and nuance.
