WINE DESCRIPTION
Founded in 1973, Cakebread Cellars started with a 22-acre vineyard in Rutherford. Over the years, they acquired 15 sites across Napa Valley and the North Coast, totaling 560 vineyard acres. Originally pasture, the University of California at Davis advised planting Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Jack Cakebread made wines until 1978 when son Bruce joined as winemaker. The winery began in a tractor shed, expanded in 1977, refurbished a barn in 1980, and expanded again in 1985, increasing capacity to 28,000 cases. In 1995, another expansion allowed for separate fermentation and maturation of vineyard lots, enhancing terroir expression before blending.
