With a long history of winemaking, New Jersey is now emerging as a major player in the US wine scene. New Jersey has a long history of winemaking, dating back to the 1600s when Dutch settlers planted the first vines in the state. In the 1700s, the British took over and continued to cultivate the vineyards. By the 1800s, New Jersey had become one of the largest wine-producing states in the US. However, Prohibition in the 1920s put an end to the state's winemaking industry. It wasn't until the 1980s that winemaking began to make a comeback in New Jersey.
