Barão de Vilar - Vinhos, S.A. is the youngest company in the Port Wine industry, formed in January 1996 from a collection of wines acquired by Fernando Luiz van Zeller for his sons Fernando and Álvaro. Its social denomination recovers a noble title from D. Maria II of Portugal Cristiano Nicolau Kopke, the 1st Baron of Vilar, bestowed in 1836, which, by descent, remains in the direct possession of the family. The winemaking process involves traditional methods, including fermentation and fortification, resulting in a rich and vibrant ruby color. This Port exhibits a luscious and full-bodied style, with flavors of ripe red fruits and a hint of spice. The Douro Valley in Portugal is one of the oldest and most iconic wine regions in the world. Located in the north of the country, the region is renowned for its stunning scenery and its production of world-class fortified wines.
The Douro Valley was first demarcated in 1756 and originally applied only to port production. It was extended to include table wine in 1979, with the first glimmer of the region’s potential for non-fortified still red wines appearing when port shippers Casa Ferreirinha launched Barca Velha in 1952.
