Wine Description:
Bodegas Alvear is the oldest operating winery in the Spanish region of Andalucia. It is located in the DO of Montilla Moriles, next door to the more famous region of Jerez. This wine is made from sun-dried Pedro Ximinez grapes resulting in a sweet base wine with flavors of raisins and chocolate. This base wine is then added to a Solera. While wine is bottled from the solera each year, the solera is never emptied and still maintains a fraction of each wine that has been added to it. This particular solera has been in operation since 1927 and produces a very complex wine with notes of coffee, creme brulee, and treacle. Alvear Solera is known for offering a harmonious balance of flavors and aromas. With its exceptional story and distinctive style, this wine is a must for those who enjoy the unusual.

Wine Expert Note:

Alvear Solera is mahogany in color with a pronounced nose of chocolate, raisins, and brown sugar. The palate is thick and unctuous with a lush sweetness that is countered by balanced, soft acidity. The finish is very long with expansive notes of treacle, and caramel. Enjoy with a walnut-loaded triple chocolate brownie or savor it on its own. This wine will last indefinitely in the bottle. However, once opened it is best consumed within a month.

This wine is made from the Pedro Ximénez grape variety, which is grown in the unique soil and climate conditions of the region. The vineyards are located at high altitudes, which allows for slow ripening and concentration of flavors. The winemaking process involves sun-drying the grapes to increase their sugar content before fermentation and aging in oak barrels for over 20 years. The resulting wine is a rich, sweet, and complex dessert wine with notes of raisins, figs, and caramel. Its exceptional quality and unique style make it a must-try for any wine enthusiast.

Alvear Amontillado Carlos VII epitomizes the traditional style of Montilla-Moriles, sourced from the Grand Cru subzone of Sierra de Montilla de Calidad Superior. Crafted solely from 100% Pedro Ximénez grapes harvested from sustainably farmed, old head-trained vines dating back to 1920-1980. Grown in Albariza soils rich in calcium carbonate, enduring a semi-Continental Mediterranean climate with high temperatures and irregular rainfall. Following a unique winemaking process, this emblematic Amontillado undergoes an average 30-year aging period in American oak butts using the soleras & criaderas system. Resulting in a wine of remarkable concentration, boasting high alcohol, acidity, and a profound expression of Montilla-Moriles' terroir.
