Bebame was founded by Don Heistuman, a well-known Oregon wine wholesaler, with the goal of creating a California wine that echoed his love for Beaujolais, Chinon, and other old-world styles. Partnering with winemaker Steve Edmunds (of Edmunds St. John) and Sierra Foothills vineyard manager Ron Mansfield, the first vintage of Bebame was released in 2008. The wine is primarily Cabernet Franc with a touch of Gamay, sourced from Barsotti Ranch and Camino Alto vineyards in El Dorado County. These high-elevation sites, with their unique red granite and volcanic loam soils, produce wines that balance old-world elegance with California’s vibrant fruit character.

The Sierra Foothills wine region is located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California, USA.
The discovery of gold near Sutter Mill in 1848 led to the California Gold Rush, resulting in many settlers from Southern Europe who established vineyards to supply them with wine. By the 1860s, the Sierra Foothills wine industry was booming before the depression and Prohibition reduced the industry to just a few vineyards.
