Shandong is China's largest wine-producing province, located on the east coast equidistant between Beijing and Shanghai. With its vast size, maritime climate and strategic location, it has become an important hub of the Chinese wine industry. Shandong has a long history of winemaking, with records of grape cultivation dating back to the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD). The region has been producing wine for centuries, but it was not until the late 20th century that the industry began to take off. In the 1990s, the Chinese government began to invest heavily in the region, and the number of wineries has grown steadily ever since.
