Sao Paulo state, located in the South East of Brazil, is involved of every aspect of Brazilian life as the populous hub of national industry, it was the large population which provided the foundation of wine production in Sao Paulo state. Farms were initially planted, often by Italian migrants. on the outskirts of the city to provide it with fresh fruits and vegetables. Some of them have switched to wine as the domestic wine culture has grown.

GRAPES & WINE STYLES

The state of Sao Paulo is the third biggest producer of wine in Brazil with over 7,200 hectares planted. Despite this, its production lags way behind the leaders due to its equal focus on the production of graoe juice. The popular grape varoeties include Moscato, made into easy drinking, sweet, sparkling wine, and the international grapes Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are the dominant grape varieties, both mad into still table wines.

INTERESTING FACT

Afonso de Sousa planted Vitis vinifera grapes at Sao Vicente, on the coast of Sao Paulo state, in the 1530 after arriving from Portugal givning Brazil a longer grape growing tradition than many New World countries.
