Ahr is Germany's most northerly premium red wine region, located in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of the country. It is known for its steep, terraced vineyards and its red wines made from the Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) grape. Ahr has a long history of winemaking, with evidence of vineyards dating back to the Roman Empire. The region was officially recognized as a wine-producing area in the late 19th century, and it has since become one of Germany's most important wine regions.
