Xarel·lo is a Mediterranean white grape variety that is widely used in Catalonia, mainly for Cava production. It is known for its refreshing acidity and fruit-forward flavour profile.
Xarel·lo grapes have a lemon greennhue. They have a beautiful fruity notes of citrus, apples, almond skin and honey, with high levels of acidity.
Xarel·lo is mainly grown in Catalonia, particularly in the regions of Penedès and Conca de Barbera, where it is the main grape variety used in Cava production. It is also found in other Spanish regions such as Rioja, Valencia and Galicia. Xarel·lo grapes are relatively easy to grow. They can tolerate a wide range of climate conditions, making it very popular amongst the grapegrowers. The grapes are typically fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve their freshness and acidity. Xarel·lo is used to make a range of styles including sparkling wines, white wines and sweet wines. The wine is aged for at least nine months before it is released. It is also used to make white wines that are light and crisp, with a floral aroma and citrusy notes. In Valencian, Xarel·lo is used to make a sweet, late-harvest wine called Mistela. Xarel·lo wines pair well with a range of foods. The sparkling wines are a great match for seafood and light salads, while the white wines pair nicely with grilled fish and vegetables. The sweet Mistela wines are best enjoyed with desserts or on their own.
The name Xarel·lo comes from the Catalan words ‘xar’, which means hard, and ‘el·lo’, which means small.
This is in reference to the small, hard berries of the Xarel·lo grape.
