Vidal blanc is a hybrid grape variety that can be found in both North America and in some scandinavian countries, like Sweden. It is a white grape variety mostly known for the production of icewine in Canada.
Vidal blanc has large bunches with small berries that are golden yellow in colour. Its aromas are characteristic of tropical fruits, such as mango and pineapple, as well as citrus fruits, such as lime and grapefruit. Its taste profile is quite distinctive, with a honeyed sweetness balanced out by a good acidity.
Vidal is primarily grown in Canada and the United States. Is is now also grown successfully in Sweden. Vidal blanc is moderately winter-hardy and mid ripening. It is usually made into late harvest wines and ice wines but also regular dry wines are produced. It is also sometimes blended with other grape varieties to add fruitiness to the blend. In Canada, it is mostly used to make sweet, ice wines, while in the United States it is commonly used to make dry, aromatic white wines. Vidal blanc is a very versatile grape variety and pairs well with a variety of different dishes. It is particularly good with seafood and white meats. It also pairs well with spicy dishes, such as curries and stir-fries.
Eventhough Vidal was bred in France in the 1930s, it is not authorized there and is rarely found.
