Trincadeira Preta

Trincadeira Preta

Trincadeira Preta, also known as Tinta Amarela, is an old and widely planted Portuguese red grape variety with over 40 known synonyms. While its exact origins are unclear, DNA analysis suggests possible genetic links to Ramisco and Sercial. The variety is well-adapted to Portugal’s hot and dry conditions, thriving in the Alentejo, Dão, Douro, and Tejo regions. It is used in both dry red wines and Port wine production, where it contributes spice, color, and complexity.

COLOR, AROMAS & TASTE PROFILE

Trincadeira Preta wines are deeply colored with a rich, spicy profile. They exhibit aromas of cinnamon, cloves, and dark berries, often complemented by earthy and herbal undertones. The wines can be full-bodied with medium to high acidity and smooth tannins, offering excellent aging potential. When used in Port blends, it adds structure and aromatic depth.

REGIONAL FEATURES

Trincadeira Preta is widely cultivated across Portugal, particularly in the Alentejo, Dão, Douro, and Tejo regions. The variety is highly resistant to heat and drought, making it well-suited to Portugal’s warm climate. However, it is prone to powdery mildew and botrytis, requiring careful vineyard management to ensure healthy yields. Outside Portugal, it is grown on a very limited scale in Argentina, Australia, Spain, and South Africa.

INTERESTING FACT

Trincadeira Preta is sometimes confused with Castelão Francês and other similarly named varieties, but it has distinct characteristics that make it a key player in both dry Portuguese reds and Port wine blends.
