Tocai Friulano, also called Sauvignonasse in France, is a white grape variety grown mainly in northeastern Italy and Slovenia. It is known for its citrusy aromas, medium to light body and crisp acidity, making it one of the most popular wines in the region.
Tocai Friulano has a pale yellow colour and a delicate floral bouquet with notes of pear, apple and citrus. On the palate, it is crisp and light-bodied with refreshing acidity, juicy fruit and subtle almond flavours.
Tocai Friulano is most commonly found in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy. It is also grown in Slovenia, Croatia, Ukraine, Russia, France and in Argentina. Tocai Friulano is a vigorous variety, susceptible to botrytis, downy mildew and powdery mildew. It does best in well-drained soils and a moderate warm climate. The grapes are usually picked early to retain their acidity and freshness. The wines are usually unoaked and meant to be drunk young. The wines from Friuli-Venezia Giulia are typically light-bodied and dry with citrus and almond flavours. Slovenian wines tend to be slightly more full-bodied, with ripe peach and melon aromas. Tocai Friulano pairs well with seafood and white meats. It is also a great match for dishes with cream sauces.
Tocai Friulano is not related to the Hungarian Tokaji grape variety, despite the similar name.
