Rare Italian red grape variety, used for deep coloured flavourful wines.
Teroldego is a dark-skinned variety of grape native to the Trentino-Alto Adige region of northern Italy. It produces deep-hued, full-bodied red wines with intense aromas of ripe cherry and raspberry, along with notes of tobacco, leather, spices and dried herbs. On the palate, it has bold tannins and high acidity, with flavours of blackberry, plum and spice.
Teroldego is mostly grown in the Trentino-Alto Adige region of northern Italy, with smaller plantings in Austria, and more recently in California. It is the most widely-planted grape variety in the Trentino-Alto Adige region, where it is the primary grape used in the DOC wines of Trentino and the Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT. Teroldego is a relatively easy grape to cultivate, as it is relatively resistant to fungal diseases. The grapes are usually harvested in mid-October, and are usually vinified in stainless steel tanks with maceration lasting from 10-15 days. The resulting wines are full-bodied and deeply coloured, with intense aromas and high acidity. Teroldego wines are typically made in a dry, full-bodied style, with intense aromas and high acidity. The wines of the Trentino-Alto Adige region are known for their complexity and structure. Teroldego pairs well with a variety of dishes, including hearty stews, grilled meats and game, and hard cheeses. It is also a great pairing for mushroom-based dishes, as its high acidity helps to cut through the richness of the dish.
Teroldego is thought to be related to the Pinot Noir variety.
