Suppezza
Suppezza is a red grape variety native to Italy, primarily cultivated on the Sorrento Peninsula in the Campania region. DNA analyses suggest a close relationship to Falanghina Flegrea, though its exact parentage remains unknown. It is mainly used as a blending grape in the DOC wines of Penisola Sorrentina.
Suppezza ripens mid-season and contributes to blends with its structured and balanced profile. The wines are typically medium-bodied, enhancing the overall complexity of the region’s red blends.
Suppezza is grown in the Sorrento Peninsula, particularly in the Gragnano and Lettere subzones of the Penisola Sorrentina DOC. The vine is vigorous and productive but is susceptible to botrytis, while showing moderate resistance to downy mildew.
Despite its historical presence in Campania, Suppezza remains relatively obscure and is mostly found in traditional vineyard blends rather than as a single varietal wine.
