San Lunardo

San Lunardo

San Lunardo is an ancient, native white grape variety from the Campania region, particularly cultivated on the island of Ischia since the 1700s. Its origin is uncertain, with theories suggesting it is named after either a religious figure, 'Don Lunardo,' or the local patron saint, San Leonardo. The variety is at risk of extinction, with only about 10 hectares currently planted. It is resistant to climatic adversities but vulnerable to diseases like botrytis. Typically blended with other white varieties in the DOC Ischia, it produces a delicate, slightly bitter yellow wine.

COLOR, AROMAS & TASTE PROFILE

San Lunardo wines are pale straw yellow, with fruity and floral aromas. On the palate, they are fresh, savory, and slightly bitter, offering a balanced and delicate flavor.

REGIONAL FEATURES

San Lunardo is grown primarily in Campania, with its roots in the Ischia region. It is officially recognized in Italy's national registry since 1971, but its plantings have significantly dwindled, making it a rare and endangered variety.

INTERESTING FACT

The name 'San Lunardo' may refer to either the religious figure 'Don Lunardo' or the local patron saint, San Leonardo.
