Rkatsiteli is a white grape variety of Georgian origin and is widely regarded as one of the oldest and most important grape varieties in the world, dating back to 3000 BC. It is known for its versatility, allowing it to be used for a range of styles and wines, from sparkling to fortified.
Rkatsiteli grapes are medium-sized, with a golden yellow-green colour and a thick, leathery skin. They have a very distinctive aroma profile, with notes of white flowers, honey and dried apricots. The taste of Rkatsiteli wines is intense, with high acidity. The most common flavour notes are citrus, white peach, dried apricot and a hint of spice.
Rkatsiteli is mainly grown in Eastern Europe, particularly in Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, Armenia and Russia. It is also found in some New World countries, such as the United States, Canada, South Africa and Australia. Rkatsiteli is a late-ripening variety, and is usually harvested in mid-September. It is a very resistant grape and can tolerate colder temperatures and frost. In terms of winemaking, Rkatsiteli is usually fermented in stainless steel tanks, but can also be barrel-aged for a longer time. Rkatsiteli wines vary greatly depending on the region. In Georgia for example, the wines are usually made in a traditional style, which includes the usage of clay amphoras. In Moldova and Ukraine, on the other hand, the wines tend to be fuller-bodied and more intense. Also fortifed, as well as sparkling wines are produced. Rkatsiteli pairs well with a range of dishes, from light appetizers to heavier main courses. Try pairing it with grilled fish, roasted poultry, pasta dishes and creamy cheeses.
Rkatsiteli is by far the most widely planted grape variety in Georgia.
It represents more than 55 % of all grapes harvested in Georgia per year.
