Poulsard an ancient black grape variety from Jura with beautiful bouquet aromas.
Poulsard has a light red to pale pink colour and thin skins. Its aromas are delicate and fruity, with red berry fruits, and some herbal, floral and spice notes. On the palate, it has a light body and low tannin, with red berry fruit flavours, herbal and floral notes.
Poulsard is mainly grown in the Jura, France and in some parts of Switzerland. Poulsard is a very delicate grape variety. Due to the proximity to the Alps, there are challanges such as spring frosts, coulure and sunburn throughout the growing season. The best practice is to prune long and trellised. The wines are usually made in a light, fruity style, with minimal oak influence. In the Jura region of France, Poulsard is often blended with other grape varieties, such as Trousseau and Pinot Noir, to produce light, bright red wines that have distinctive aromas and flavours. The wines are usually low in tannin and body, with red berry fruit and herbal notes. In Switzerland, Poulsard is also made into s rosé and sparkling wines, known as Crémant du Jura. These wines are usually light-bodied, with delicate aromas and flavours of red berry fruit. Poulsard pairs well with light dishes such as salads, fish and white meats. It also pairs well with cheeses such as Comte, Morbier and Reblochon.
Poulsard is the second most planted grape variety in Jura.
