Piquepoul Blanc is an ancient Mediterranean white grape variety, with mouthwateringly acidity
Piquepoul Blanc (also known as Picpoul) produces light-bodied wines with a pale yellow colouring and green hues. Aromas of citrus, white flowers and herbs are usual, with some notes of green apple, pear and fennel. The taste profile is fruity and acidic, with a crisp finish.
Piquepoul Blanc originated in the area around Pinet in Languedoc, France. It is grown throughout the Mediterranean, with much of the production coming from France and Spain. Piquepoul Blanc is a vigorous grape variety, and requires careful pruning and canopy management to avoid over-cropping and to ensure good quality wines. It is generally fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged on its lees. In France, Piquepoul Blanc is grown in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, where it is used to make fresh and lively wines with a high acidity. In the south of France, the grape is blended with Grenache Blanc and Clairette to create a crisp and aromatic white wine. In Italy, the grape is used to produce light and aromatic white wines. In Spain, the grape is used to create refreshing and light wines, with some grapefruit and herbal notes.. Piquepoul Blanc is best served chilled, and pairs well with fresh oyster, seafood, light salads and poultry dishes.
The name Picpoul means 'stings on the lips' in French, which is referring to the mouthwatering acidity the grape has.
