Müller-Thurgau

Müller-Thurgau is a white grape variety created by Dr. Hermann Müller from Thurgau, Switzerland in 1882. It is an inter-specific hybrid grape, a cross between Riesling and Madeleine Royale, and is widely grown in Germany as well as other parts of Europe and across the world.

COLOR, AROMAS & TASTE PROFILE

Müller-Thurgau grapes produce light-bodied white wines with a pale greenish-gold colour. The aromas of this variety are typically floral and fruity, with notes of peach, apricot, pear, honey, and tropical fruit. The flavour profile is usually fresh and fruity with a moderate acidity and a hint of spice.

REGIONAL FEATURES

Müller-Thurgau is widely grown in Germany, as well as other parts of Europe such as Switzerland, Austria, England, Italy, Hungary, Croatia and the Czech Republic. It is also cultivated in the New World, for example in the United States and New Zealand. Müller-Thurgau is a vigorous variety that produces high yields. It ripens quickly and is usually harvested in August. It is best grown in cooler climates, but can also do well in warmer regions with moderate temperatures. In terms of winemaking, the grapes are usually vinified in stainless steel tanks to retain the freshness and aromas. Müller-Thurgau wines are generally light-bodied and fruity, with moderate acidity and a pleasant balance of sweetness. In Germany, the wines are made in an dry or off-dry style, while in Austria they tend to be dry. In New Zealand the wine is often made in an off-dry style. Müller-Thurgau wines pair well with a wide variety of foods, from light dishes such as salads and seafood to heavier dishes such as roasted meats and spicy curries. The light body and moderate acidity of the wines make them a versatile pairing for many dishes.

INTERESTING FACT

Müller-Thurgau was originally recorded as a crossing between Riesling and Silvaner but later onwards, DNA-profiling clearly revealed that it is in fact Riesling × Madeleine Royale.

Ever since then, Müller-Thurgau has been the most successful German cross.
