Moscatel de Setúbal is a fortified wine made from the grape variety of the same name, grown in and around Setúbal, Portugal.
Moscatel de Setúbal (also known as Muscat of Alexandria) is a white grape variety that produces a golden-hued wine with a heady aroma, reminiscent of honeysuckle and orange blossom. It has a full-bodied taste with a sweetness that ranges from medium to very sweet. It has a high alcohol content, around 18-20% ABV.
As the name suggests, Moscatel de Setúbal is mainly grown in the Setúbal Peninsula, located just southeast of Lisbon, Portugal. Moscatel grape skin is added to the finish wine for an extended period of time, usually several months, to pick up the deep golden, spiced and floral character. The wine is then fortified with a neutral grape spirit, and aged in oak casks for several years. Depending on the vintage, the wine can range from medium sweet to luscious. Moscatel de Setúbal is best served with desserts, such as tarts and cakes, as well as with cheeses and other salty snacks.
The wine is traditionally served with a local dessert called “pastel de nata”, which is a custard tart.
