Grape Colour, Aromas and Taste Profile: Muscat of Alexandria is a white grape variety with a large, round, pale-yellow berry. It is known for its intense aromatic characteristics, with aromas of exotic fruits, rose petals dried fruits and wild flowers. The grape is extremly versatile and therefore all types of different wine styles can be found.
Muscat of Alexandria is predominantly grown in the south-east region of Spain, mainly in Valencia, Murcia and Alicante. It is also found in France, Italy, Greece, in the Canary Islands, Portugal, Chile and Argentina. Muscat of Alexandria is a highly productive grape variety that is best suited to warm climates. It is an late ripening variety. The grapes are usually harvested in August or early September. The resulting wines are usually low in alcohol and have a light body. However, also distinct sweet wines from sun dried grapes as well as fortified versions are produced. In Spain, Muscat of Alexandria is often used to make sweet fortified wines, for example in Jerez to produce Moscatel sherries. In Portugal, it is used to make sweet and fortified wines, such as Moscatel de Setúbal. In Chile and Argentina, the grape is used to make dry and aromatic white wines. Muscat of Alexandria (when sweet) is best suited to dishes with sweet and fruity flavours, such as desserts, fruit-based dishes, or dishes with a sweet-and-sour sauce. It can also be paired with soft cheeses and lightly spiced dishes.
In Chile Muscat of Alexandria is mostly distilled into the national spirit, pisco.
This spirit is so popular, that Muscat of Alexandria is the country’s third most planted white grape variety.
