Meslier Saint-François

Meslier Saint-François

Meslier Saint-François is a white grape variety originating from the Gâtinais region in the Paris Basin, the result of a natural cross between Gouais Blanc and Chenin. It is also known as Orbois, a synonym it shares with Arbois. The grape is primarily planted in small quantities, around 50 hectares in France, and is used mainly in the production of eaux-de-vie for Cognac and Armagnac.

COLOR, AROMAS & TASTE PROFILE

Meslier Saint-François wines are light and fresh, often low in alcohol and lacking in distinctive flavors, making them more suitable for distillation than for table wine production. The grapes are pulpy and have a slightly sweet taste. The eaux-de-vie produced from this grape are finely bouqueted.

REGIONAL FEATURES

This grape variety is mainly grown in the Gâtinais area of the Paris Basin and is used in the production of eaux-de-vie for Cognac and Armagnac. The plant has a medium to low vigor and tends to bud early, making it susceptible to spring frosts. It is sensitive to oidium and gray rot, and moderately resistant to black rot and mildew.

INTERESTING FACT

Despite its limited use in winemaking, Meslier Saint-François is valued for its role in creating high-quality eaux-de-vie, especially in the iconic spirits of Cognac and Armagnac.
