Melara

Melara

Melara is a white grape variety primarily grown in the western Emilia-Romagna region, especially around Piacenza. Known for its thick skins, it is used mostly in the production of sweet wines, particularly the DOC Colli Piacentini Vin Santo di Vigoleno. The grape has a natural affinity for drying, which concentrates its sugars and flavors. Its origins are unclear, and it is also called Merlara, named after the blackbirds that are attracted to its ripe, sweet berries.

COLOR, AROMAS & TASTE PROFILE

Melara wines are intensely sweet with a deep amber color. Aromas of honey, dried citrus, and toasted nuts, especially hazelnuts and almonds, are prominent. The wine’s richness comes from the concentration of sugars in the dried grapes, enhancing its sweet profile.

REGIONAL FEATURES

Melara is found in the Piacenza province of Emilia-Romagna, particularly in the Colli Piacentini and Val d’Arda regions. It is commonly harvested early in the season, around the end of August, to ensure it retains its sweetness. The grape is often blended with the Santa Maria variety to produce Vin Santo di Vigoleno, a local specialty.

INTERESTING FACT

Melara is named after the blackbirds (‘merli’) that are drawn to its ripe, sweet berries, and is mainly used in producing the little-known but highly regarded Vin Santo di Vigoleno, a dessert wine from the Piacenza hills.
