Mavrotragano
Mavrotragano is an indigenous red grape variety that is grown on the island of Santorini, Greece.
Mavrotragano is a dark-skinned variety with high amounts of tannins, colour and acidity. The grape produces wines that are full-bodied, intense and complex with notes of blackberry and other dark fruits, leather, herbs and spices. The tannins and acidity give these wines a firm structure, making them suitable for ageing.
Mavrotragano is grown exclusively on the island of Santorini in the Cyclades region of Greece. It is found in small vineyards that are protected from strong winds and salt spray by the unique soil and terroir of the island. Mavrotragano is a low yielding variety with small berries. It has good resistance to many diseases, hence it is a relatively easy to grow grape. Mavrotragano is a bold wine that pairs well with a variety of dishes. The tannins and acidity make it a great match for red meats, rich sauces, game and hard cheeses.
Mavrotragano is believed to be one of the oldest grape varieties in the world.
It is thought to have been brought to Santorini by the Phoenicians some 4000 years ago.
