Malvasia Preta
Malvasia Preta is a red grape variety native to Portugal, primarily grown in the Douro and Beiras regions. It is a late-maturing, high-yielding variety, often used in blends but never as a single-varietal wine. Recent DNA analysis suggests it is a natural cross between Cayetana Blanca and Alfrocheiro. Known for its floral red wines, it produces wines with aromas of raspberries and violets, showing ageing potential. It is susceptible to diseases like powdery mildew and botrytis.
Malvasia Preta wines are typically floral, with aromas of blackcurrant, citrus, and spices. The wines are known for their elegant structure, with fresh intensity and round tannins, leading to a long finish. They exhibit a brick-red color and a distinctive, elegant style.
Malvasia Preta is grown in the Douro and Beiras regions of Portugal and is permitted in the Távora-Varosa DOC. It thrives in the harsh conditions of the Douro Valley and is often found in old vines. It is a key component in blends with other varieties like Rufete, Tinta Francisca, and Bastardo.
Despite its floral and elegant character, Malvasia Preta is not often used as a single-varietal wine.
It stands out in the Douro for its unique balance of intensity and acidity, distinguishing it from the region's typical full-bodied wines.
