Malvasia di Casorzo

Malvasia di Casorzo

Malvasia di Casorzo is a black grape variety from the Malvasia family, cultivated primarily in the municipality of Casorzo in the province of Asti, Piedmont. Like other Malvasia grapes, its name traces back to Monemvasia, a Byzantine stronghold where sweet wines were historically produced and exported by Venetian merchants. This aromatic variety is the basis of Malvasia di Casorzo DOC, a sweet and aromatic red wine that can be made in both still and sparkling versions.

COLOR, AROMAS & TASTE PROFILE

Malvasia di Casorzo wines range in color from cherry red to ruby red, often with a vibrant, translucent quality. The wines are slightly aromatic, featuring a fine and intense nose with floral and fruity notes. On the palate, they are balanced, velvety, and sweet, with a delicate, lingering finish. The sparkling versions add freshness and enhance the aromatic complexity.

REGIONAL FEATURES

Malvasia di Casorzo is grown in a small area of Piedmont, particularly in Casorzo and surrounding municipalities. The region’s temperate climate and calcareous-clay soils provide ideal conditions for this aromatic grape. However, its production is inconsistent due to its sparse clusters, which can lead to fluctuations in yield.

INTERESTING FACT

Malvasia di Casorzo wines must contain at least 90% of this grape, with the remaining 10% allowed to be Freisa, Grignolino, or Barbera.

The variety has been documented in Piedmont since at least 1468, highlighting its long-standing presence in the region.
