Krkošija
Krkošija is a white grape variety from Bosnia-Herzegovina, primarily cultivated in the region of Mostar. It is an all-female grape that relies on cross-pollination from other vines. Often blended with the main Bosnian-Herzegovinian variety, Žilavka, Krkošija is valued for its high sugar content and acidity, although it does not have a strong aromatic profile. It produces a greenish-yellow wine with good extract and a slight nuance of acerbity.
Krkošija wines are greenish-yellow with a good extract but lack distinct aromas. The taste tends to be neutral with a slight acerbity. It is not typically used as a standalone wine but works well in blends, particularly with Žilavka, where it enhances the overall quality.
Krkošija is cultivated in the southern part of Bosnia-Herzegovina, particularly in the regions of Mostar, Brotnjo, Dubrava, and Ljubuški. It thrives in permeable, moist soils like ultisols and does not perform well in dry or infertile soils. The grape is harvested in the third quarter of the year, similar to Žilavka.
Although Krkošija is not a standalone quality wine, it plays an important role in blends with Žilavka, enhancing both sugar content and acidity levels.
