Kreaca is an ancient white grape variety originating from the Balkan region, with over 40 known synonyms, highlighting its historical significance. DNA analyses suggest it is a natural cross between Coarnă Alba and an unknown variety. Although sometimes confused with Frâncușă or Riesling, Kreaca is a distinct grape with strong regional variations. Once widespread in the Balkans, it is now primarily cultivated in Romania and Hungary in limited quantities.

COLOR, AROMAS & TASTE PROFILE

Kreaca wines are full-bodied and slightly aromatic, offering a well-rounded structure. The variety is known for producing balanced wines with a moderate aromatic intensity, often displaying subtle fruit and floral notes.

REGIONAL FEATURES

Kreaca is grown in small quantities in Romania (28 hectares) and Hungary (2 hectares). It is a medium to late-ripening variety with high yields, though it is moderately susceptible to botrytis and prone to both downy and powdery mildew. The variety thrives in continental climates, where it produces expressive yet approachable wines.

INTERESTING FACT

Despite its many synonyms, Kreaca should not be confused with Frâncușă or Riesling, as it has a unique genetic origin.

Its widespread historical presence across the Balkans has resulted in significant morphological variations between regions.
