Katsakoulias
Katsakoulias is a rare red grape variety from Greece, primarily cultivated on the island of Zakynthos and in small quantities on the Peloponnese. Its exact parentage remains unknown. The vine is medium to late ripening, high-yielding, and sensitive to drought. Katsakoulias is mainly used in blends with Avgoustiatis and Skylopnichtis to produce red and rosé wines.
Katsakoulias wines are known for their high acidity, making them fresh and lively. It is typically blended rather than vinified alone.
This variety is primarily found in Zakynthos and the Peloponnese. A white-berried version is reported to exist on the island of Euboea.
Katsakoulias is known by many synonyms, including Gyftokoritho, Kaltzakouli, and Katsakoulia, reflecting its local heritage and variations in spelling.
