Grechetto is an Italian white grape variety that is widely planted in the central and southern parts of the country.
Grechetto has a pale yellow-green colour. The wines made from Grechetto are noted for their floral, herbal and citrus aromas, and a nutty texture. The flavour profile is typically fresh and slightly acidic, with notes of lime, green apple, honey and hay.
Grechetto is grown in Central Italy, particularly in Umbria, Lazio and Marche, as well as in parts of Tuscany and Abruzzo. Grechetto is an early-ripening variety and is usually harvested in September or October. Grechetto wines are usually made in a light-bodied, easy-drinking style and can be drunk young. The most important Grechetto wines are found in Umbria, in Orvieto DOC and Montefalco DOC, while in Lazio it is blended with Malvasia and Trebbiano to produce the Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone DOC. In Tuscany, Grechetto can add to some DOCs as a minor blending partner. Grechetto wines pair well with seafood and light dishes such as salads, grilled vegetables and fish.
Grechetto should not be confused with Grechetto di Todi grown in Emilia-Romagna, which is a synoym for the local variety Pignoletto.
