Godello

Godello is a rare, white grape variety native to northwest Spain. It is grown mainly in Galicia and the neighbouring region of Portugal. It produces complex, vibrant wines with aromas of citrus, stone fruit and blossoms.

COLOR, AROMAS & TASTE PROFILE

Godello has medium-thick, yellow-green skins and produces medium to full-bodied white wines. It has a strong aroma of citrus fruit and floral notes, with a mineral finish. Its taste profile is refreshing and fruit-forward, with a hint of spice and a crisp finish.

REGIONAL FEATURES

Godello is mainly grown in Galicia, in the northwest of Spain. In neighbouring Portugal it is especially grown in the Douro valley where it is also known as "Gouveio". Godello is a productive, early-ripening variety. It prefers a warm climate and soil with good drainage. Godello can produce high sugar levels and medium to high acidity. It is often blended with other varieties such as Albariño and Verdejo, and is also made as a varietal wine. The wines are typically fermented in stainless steel tanks but can also be aged for several months in oak barrels. Godello wines are known for their freshness and minerality, and can range from medium- to full-bodied. The wines from Galicia are typically fruitier and more aromatic than those from other regions. They are usually unoaked and have a mineral finish. Godello wines pair well with seafood, white meats, and rich, creamy dishes. They are also good with cheese and vegetarian dishes.
