Forsellina

Forsellina

Forsellina is an indigenous black grape variety from the Verona province in Veneto, Italy. First mentioned in 1824, it is also known as Forselina, Forsellana Pignola, and Forsella. It is a vigorous variety with moderate production, well-tolerating both climatic adversities and fungal diseases. Forsellina is used primarily in blends for wines like Bardolino and Valpolicella, offering a ruby red color and fruity aromas.

COLOR, AROMAS & TASTE PROFILE

The wines made from Forsellina are ruby red with light fruity aromas of strawberry and raspberry. On the palate, they are characterized by good sapidity, balanced body, and mild aromatic notes.

REGIONAL FEATURES

Primarily grown in the Verona area, Forsellina is included in the regulations for Bardolino and Valpolicella wines. It ripens in September and is sensitive to grey rot, making it unsuitable for Amarone production due to its thin skin.

INTERESTING FACT

Forsellina is sometimes called Forselina because of its forked shoots, which may result from viral disease.

Despite its limited use, it could be a promising blending agent for lighter red wines in the future.
