Ekim Kara
Ekim Kara, also known by synonyms such as Echim Kara, Ekim Qara, and Ukjm Kara, is a red grape variety originating from Ukraine. Its name, meaning 'Black Doctor', is linked to its historical introduction by a Russian doctor in the late 19th century. Though it is mostly used in blends, particularly with the Cevat Kara variety, Ekim Kara is most famous for its role in the production of sweet, fortified wines like Chorny Doctor, produced by the Massandra State Winery on the Crimean Peninsula. The variety, though once cultivated in small quantities, has seen a significant decline in recent years.
Ekim Kara wines, often used in fortified blends, are known for their rich, deep color and robust flavor profile. The wine is typically sweet, with a velvety mouthfeel and complex flavors that make it an ideal base for fortified styles. The specific aromas and taste characteristics are less defined due to its blending nature but often include rich, dark fruit notes and a smooth, full-bodied texture.
Ekim Kara is primarily grown in Ukraine, specifically on the Crimean Peninsula, where it plays a vital role in the production of sweet, fortified wines. It is often blended with the Cevat Kara variety, and the wines are highly regarded in the region, particularly the famous Chorny Doctor liqueur wine produced by the Massandra State Winery. Despite its historical significance, the grape has almost disappeared, with 27 hectares remaining in 2010.
Ekim Kara should not be confused with the Kefessiya variety, which also goes by the name Doktorsky Chernyi or 'Black Doctor'.
Despite the similar names, they are distinct varieties, and Ekim Kara is primarily known for its role in the production of sweet, fortified wines from Crimea.
