Casavecchia is a rare and ancient red grape variety that is native to the Campania region in Italy. In the past, the variety was almost completely lost to history but has recently been rediscovered.
Casavecchia has a dark skin, and produces wines that are deeply coloured and full-bodied. Aromas and flavours of ripe blackberry, cherry, wild herbs, liquorice and spices can be found in wines made from the variety. On the palate, expect a soft tannic structure, medium acidity and a long finish.
Casavecchia is grown in the Campania region of Italy, esclusively in the countryside north of Caserta. Casavecchia is a low vigor variety but has potential to make quality wines. It is rich in anthocyanins so that the wines are deep-colored but with low level, smooth tannins. Casavecchia is mainly found in Campania, where it is used to make medium-bodied wines with aromas of ripe red fruits, spices and herbs. Casavecchia's bright acidity and soft tannins make it a great food-friendly wine. The variety pairs well with dishes such as pasta with red sauce, grilled vegetables, and roasted meats.
The name Casavecchia derives from the Italian phrase “casa vecchia”, which means “old house”.
This is a reference to the history of the variety, which is believed to have been grown in the region since ancient times.
