Bical is a white grape variety that is mainly grown in Portugal. It is a moderately productive variety with can produce wines that are somewhat similar to the ones produced from Riesling.
Bical grapes produce wines with a pale yellow colour, aromas of green apple, peach and flowers, and a taste profile of citrus and tropical fruits. Its wines are fresh and have a slight hint of spice.
Bical is mainly grown in Portugal, particularly in the Beiras and Dão regions. Bical is a vigorous variety and is best grown in cooler climates with well-drained clay and calcareous soils. It is an early ripening variety and is usually harvested in Ausgust.. The wines made from Bical grapes are usually unoaked, but some producers will use oak ageing to add complexity and structure. In the Beiras and Dão regions of Portugal, Bical is used to make light and fresh white wines that are best enjoyed young. In these regions, Bical is often blended with other varieties, such as Arinto de Buscelas or Cerceal Branco, to produce more complex wines. On its own or blended with Arinto, it is often used to produce sparkling wines. Bical wines are best paired with lighter dishes such as salads, seafood and white meat. They also pair well with cheeses such as goats cheese, feta and ricotta.
Bical benefits from aging in bottle.
Over time these wines can develop aromas similar to those of aged Riesling, including aromas of Petrol and Kerosin.
