Bena
Bena is a white grape variety originating from Bosnia-Herzegovina, primarily grown in the Mostar region. It ripens in the first half of September and is resistant to grape downy mildew and fungal diseases. Bena is known for its regular pollination and good yields, especially in warmer areas and weak soil. The variety is often blended with Žilavka to balance sweetness and acidity. The wine from Bena is of medium quality, with lower alcohol content compared to Žilavka.
Bena wines are medium-bodied with a good level of acidity. The wine has a balanced sweetness similar to Krkošija and Žilavka, though the higher acidity makes it a suitable supplement to Žilavka in blends.
Bena is primarily cultivated in the Mostar region of Bosnia-Herzegovina. It thrives in warmer climates and on weaker soils. Due to its resistance to disease and good adaptability, it is often grown on hard-to-reach terrains. Bena is also used as a table grape.
Bena is often blended with Žilavka to enhance the acidity and balance the overall sweetness, creating a harmonious wine that complements its neighboring variety.
