Avesso is a white grape variety native to Portugal and an important ingredient in the Vinho Verde appellation.
Avesso produces medium to full-bodied wines with aromas of tropical fruit, apples, pears, citrus and white flowers. On the palate, the wines are fruity and acidic, with good minerality and a distinctively salty finish.
Avesso is mainly grown in the Vinhos Verdes region of Portugal, but it can also be found in other parts of the country, such as the Douro and Alentejo regions. Avesso is a vigorous variety that is relatively easy to grow and is known to produce high yields of fruit. The wines are typically made in a crisp, light style, with no oak ageing. Sometimes the alcohol can be higher than the 11.5% maximum permitted in the Vinho Verde appellation. In Vinhos Verdes, Avesso is typically blended with other indigenous grape varieties, such as Loureiro and Trajadura. These wines are light, fresh and crisp, with aromas of citrus and tropical fruits and a distinctively salty finish. Some of these wines have a light fizz that can be extremely refreshing. Avesso wines are best enjoyed with light seafood dishes, such as grilled fish, ceviche and oysters. The crisp acidity and salty finish make it a great pairing for seafood.
Avesso translates into ‘contrary’ in Portuguese.
Maybe because of its ability to achieve higher alcohol levels than other varieties in the Vinho Verde appellation.
